In Hong Kong & Asia: Although he was already well-known for his TVB serials like "The Bund" and "Hotel" and films like "Hong Kong 1941", "The Story of Woo Viet" and "Love in a Fallen City"; his popularity ascended to superstar status with the release of John Woo's "A Better Tomorrow" in 1986.

US and UK: He is best known by American and British cultists as a hard-boiled action hero specializing in portrayals of honorable hitmen, gangsters, thieves and trigger-happy cops.
